Commercial-grade vinyl strap pool furniture is made with some of the most durable and weather-resistant materials on the market. That’s because it’s manufactured from 100% virgin vinyl rather than a less stable recycled blend. This high-quality vinyl strapping also includes mildew and UV inhibitors to make it less prone to brittleness, cracking, fading and fungal growth.
Despite its built-in protections and resilience, regular strap cleaning is still necessary to maintain its longevity and beauty. Frequent exposure to suntan lotion, body oils and outside elements can quickly create residue and dirt buildup on vinyl strap patio and pool deck furniture. To keep the straps clean, prevention is key, which is why we’ve put together this easy, four-step process to clean all your vinyl strap furniture – from chaise lounges to chairs.
Vinyl Strap Cleaning Essentials
You don’t need expensive cleaners or equipment to properly maintain your vinyl strap furniture, just a few simple products and some dedicated time and energy.
Cleaning Supplies Needed
- Water hose with spray nozzle
- Mild detergent or dish soap
- Bucket
- Soft-bristled scrub brush or sponge

DON’T use bleach, chlorine or harsh abrasives. They can strip off the ultraviolet protection of the straps, causing them to fade prematurely.
DON’T dip or rinse your strap furniture in the pool. Pool chemicals can remove the UV protection inhibitors in the straps that help resist fading.
The 4-Step Vinyl Strap Cleaning Process
Once you have your supplies, in four easy steps you can clean and keep your vinyl strap furniture in beautiful condition for guests.

Pre-Rinse the Furniture
Use the hose to spray the furniture thoroughly with water to remove any loose dirt from the straps and frame. Pre-spraying the furniture with water will make cleaning with the brush much easier.
Mix the Cleaning Solution
Combine 1/4 cup of mild detergent or dish soap into a bucket with 1 gallon of hot water (not boiling!). Mix the water and soap together until you see suds form.
Scrub the Vinyl Straps
Dip your soft-bristled brush or sponge into the soapy water and scrub the pool furniture one strap at a time, working from the top downward. Be sure to clean under the straps and the crevices where dirt collects. Use a garden hose to rinse the brush's bristles with water as they become dirty.
Rinse and Dry
Spray your furniture down again with the hose to remove the soap and remaining dirt. Allow the furniture to air-dry completely outside in the sun. If you don’t have the time needed for air-drying, you can speed up the drying process by wiping it down with a microfiber cloth or towel before putting the furniture back in use for guests.
Treating Heavier Buildup
If your vinyl strap furniture hasn’t been cleaned in a while and you find the cleaning steps above don’t completely remove the dirt, repeat the mild-soap process before attempting these alternative cleaning methods:
- For mildew or persistent organic buildup: Try a mix of mild dishwashing detergent plus a 1/2 cup of white vinegar in 2 gallons of warm water, then thoroughly rinse the straps with clean water. Be sure to test a small, inconspicuous area first, particularly on older, faded or light-colored straps.
- For stubborn stains under straps: Try a vinyl cleaner – but only if the furniture manufacturer permits it. Follow the product label exactly and test a small section first, then rinse thoroughly afterward.
- For exposure to high concentrations of acid rain, fog and/or smog: Tropitone recommends cleaning its vinyl straps monthly with three parts warm water to one part ammonia, followed by a complete rinse.
Important: Not all manufacturers suggest ammonia and water for deep residue buildup. Confirm the recommendations from the manufacturer of your vinyl strap furniture before trying this specific cleaning method.

Recommended Vinyl Strap Cleaning Schedule
If you’re not sure how often to clean and maintain your vinyl strap pool and patio furniture, use this simple schedule as a guide based on the season and situation.
| Situation / Condition | Recommended Cleaning Frequency |
|---|---|
| Daily use during peak season | Rinse or wipe down as needed to remove any sunscreen or spills immediately. |
| Standard routine care during high-use months | Perform the four-step cleaning process weekly. |
| After storms or when pollen, construction dust or mildew form | Hose down promptly so that residue doesn't build up. |
| Before winter storage or season reopening | In addition to the four-step cleaning process, inspect straps and fasteners to ensure furniture is in good working order. |
When Cleaning Reveals Damage
Cleaning is also a good opportunity to inspect your commercial outdoor furniture. Look for broken vinyl straps, rust staining, chips or dents in the frame, loose hardware, and other signs of wear that may need attention before the furniture returns to service.
